Description
“Year Zero” is the first painting in the “34” Series by Laura Noel, completed in 2018-2019. The series was an experiment in “abstract as autobiography,” where each painting of the series was meant to loosely represent a year of the artist’s life.
A few words about “Year Zero” from the artist:
“I was born in Texas in the summer of 1984. I was the youngest of 3 in my immediate family, with two additional older half-siblings that had already moved out and started their own families. My dad was in construction and my mom was an accountant by trade. I don’t remember a lot about these first few years, but i’m told we lived in a beautiful yellow Victorian house that my parents successfully petitioned to be added to the historic register in Georgetown. Apparently there were also a lot of fire ants.
For this painting I chose a lot of red and yellows to not only represent the hot, dry climate of my birthplace, but also the feel of summer, which is the time of year I was born. The blue is a subliminal hint to that found in the Texas State flag. There is somewhat a suggestion of a pathway or ‘river” towards the right hand side of the composition, implying a new start; a beginning.
