Whimsy Shorelines #2

"Whimsy Shorelines" #2 An original acrylic painting set by Laura Noel
“Whimsy Shorelines” #2 Approximately 24×12” Acrylic on Canvas. Laura Noel, 2020

“Whimsy Shoreslines #2” was part of a small mini-series of works I created during the first part of the March/April 2020 Covid-19 shelter in place ordinance in California. Over the past few years I have gravitated towards larger and larger canvas for my work. However, during quarantine I ran out of those, and with limited funds I decided to find creative ways to use up some of the smaller blank canvas I had lying around my studio.

The “Whimsy Shorelines” series was made by combining two 12×12” gallery wrap canvas panels with hardware on the back to make a “new” “super” canvas of approximately 24 x 12”. I chose to attach them with a slight overlap in the center both for structural and compositional reasons. I like the depth the overlap gave the paintings. I then approached the “new’ canvas much in the same way I would paint my other diptych paintings, with lots of direct and implied connections of color and form.

Inspired by my trips to the Northern California and Oregon Coast beaches, and a definite longing to be there during quarantine, “Whimsy Shorelines” features a lot of cool blues and sandy colors. The central dividing line is meant to imply where the ocean meets the shore, and the use of repetition and circles as small stones, ocean foam, and the energy I feel from going to those places. The finished paintings are bright, vibrant, and playful- meant to bring cheer to any space.

This original painting has been SOLD, however, feel free to contact me if you’re interested in commissioning me to create a similar work.
